President Jair Bolsonaro participated in the meeting of leaders of the G20 this Saturday (30) in Rome. In his speech and in statements during the event, Bolsonaro emphasized the advance of vaccination in Brazil and the country’s economic recovery.
“Brazil has committed to an extensive and efficient vaccination program, in parallel with an agenda of emergency aid and job preservation to protect the most vulnerable. We are equally committed to an agenda of structural reforms, essential for a sustained economic recovery,” he said during his speech to G20 leaders.
The president highlighted that more than half of the Brazilian population “is already fully immunized voluntarily” and that “more than 94% of the adult population has already received at least one dose of the vaccine”. “In all, we applied more than 260 million doses, of which more than 140 million were produced in the national territory”, he stated.
Bolsonaro also praised the agreement concluded in July by the G20 and other countries on international taxation, saying it was “a significant contribution to fiscal and economic sustainability”. This agreement provides for a minimum tax of 15% for multinational companies and had the adhesion of 130 countries and jurisdictions of the 139 that are part of the so-called inclusive framework of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
During the event, the Brazilian leader had a dialogue with the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández. They spoke about the importance that Mercosur has for both countries. The Argentine joked with the Brazilian about his country’s victory in the Copa America final. Fernández said Bolsonaro still hadn’t congratulated him on the victory.
In an interview at the end of the event, the Brazilian president explained that he wanted to talk about the country’s economic situation in his speech because “Brazil is doing very well in the economic recovery” and “has done his homework” in his strategy of recovery.
