Retamas – At least 60 houses have been buried in a landslide in northern Peru.
In the town of Retamas in Pataz province, the slopes of a hill had collapsed and buried houses under masses of earth, Governor Manuel Llempén said on radio station RPP. “The extent of the damage is not yet known,” the regional government said in a statement.
At least seven people are missing, including three minors, police commissioner Carlos Alberto Valderrama said on radio station RPP. Four other people have already been rescued. Villagers and miners from a nearby mine continued to search for victims.
President Pedro Castillo sent the head of civil defense and the defense minister to the region. “We support the affected families and will take various measures together with the local authorities,” wrote the head of state on Twitter. dpa
