More than a hundred people were traveling in the vehicle, most of them from Central America
At least 54 migrants have died and fifty have been injured this Thursday in the overturning of a truck in the Mexican state of Chiapas, as reported by the director general of Civil Protection, Luis Manuel García.
The event occurred around 3:00 p.m. this Thursday between two trucks that were circulating on the Belisario Domínguez bridge, on the highway between the municipalities of Tuxla and Chiapa de Corzo, and one of the causes could be speeding. In the vehicle in which the deceased migrants were, more than a hundred people were traveling, most of them from Central America, reports the Mexican media ‘Milenio’.
Emergency teams from the Chiapas Health Secretariat, Civil Protection and the Red Cross, as well as the National Guard, have come to the site, while members of the National Civil Protection Coordination have also attended the area by order of the Presidency to “attend to the emergency”.
The governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, has expressed, through his Twitter profile, his “solidarity” with the victims of the accident and has stressed that “responsibilities will be determined according to the law.” For his part, the Mexican president, Andrés López Obrador, has lamented the “tragedy” that he has described as a “very painful” event and has sent a hug to the families of the victims.
The National Institute of Migration of Mexico has announced that the survivors of the accident will be granted “humanitarian care”, including “accommodation, food and, if they accept, visitor cards for humanitarian reasons.”
“The INM will contribute to the investigation of the facts,” the immigration authority has also advanced through social networks. The General Prosecutor’s Office has reported on the opening of an investigation. “Because it is a regrettable case of migrants that occurred in a federal communication channel, the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Human Rights (FEMDH) will act together with the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Regional Control (Fecor), as well as with all the technical and support that is necessary, to carry out the corresponding proceedings ”, he has transferred specifically.
Consular assistance for victims
On the other hand, the INM has also had an impact on coordinating efforts with the authorities to “provide assistance, consult, identify the bodies, cover funeral expenses, facilitate the repatriation of the remains to the countries of origin.” In this regard, local media have warned that some of the migrants who have survived the event are hiding to avoid being deported.
Several of the affected people would be Guatemalans. In this sense, the president of this country, Alejandro Giammattei, has affirmed that they will offer “all the necessary consular assistance” to the victims, including repatriations.
Guatemala is one of the main countries of origin of migrants who are on their way to cross Mexico with the aim of reaching the United States, a migration problem that Giammattei has precisely addressed this Thursday with the United States National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, in Washington.
Migratory movements have increased in Mexico since October 2018, when caravans with thousands of migrants, mostly Central American, began arriving in the country in an attempt to reach the United States.
