Assassin’s Creed Shadows won’t require an always-on connection: this was announced by the game’s development team, through the publication of a note which was necessary due to the controversy that has arisen in the last few hours regarding the alleged obligation.
“We wanted to share some preliminary information related to the launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, in response to some questions that we noticed emerging among community members”, reads the post written by Ubisoft Quebec.
“Assassin’s Creed Shadows will not require an always-on connection. You will need to have a connection to install the game, but you can play the entire experience offline and explore feudal Japan without the need to connect to the internet.
A question of principle or of preservation?
The reasons why many users tend to argue in the presence of a requirement such as always online do not only concern a principle and the well-known allergy to any constraint, but enter into the realm of software preservation.
In fact, we know that in some cases, after a certain number of years, game servers are shut down without the software receiving an update that can “untie” it from those verification mechanisms, and the result is the inability to continue using the product.
On the other hand, the current setup and the desire to guarantee certain functions, see for example cross-save and cross-progression but also the uploading of saves to the cloud, make it mandatory to provide at least at certain times the obligation to connect to the network.
