Asian stocks closed without a single direction on Monday, in the wake of Japan’s parliamentary election and mixed data on China’s manufacturing activity.
The Nikkei index jumped 2.61% in Tokyo on Monday, to 29,647.08 points, after the Japanese ruling party maintained a majority in Parliament in the election on Sunday, 31, strengthening the chances of political stability.
Elsewhere in Asia, South Korean Kospi gained 0.28% in Seoul to 2,978.86 points and Taiex rose 0.48% in Taiwan to 17,068.24 points, but Hang Seng fell 0.88 % in Hong Kong, at 25,154.32 points, accumulating losses for the fifth consecutive session, amid weakness in real estate and technology and healthcare stocks.
In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite had a slight drop of 0.08%, to 3,544.48 points, while the less comprehensive Shenzhen Composite gained 0.49%, to 2,411.78 points.
A survey by ISH Markit/Caixin Media showed that the Chinese manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) rose to 50.6 in October, signaling that manufacturing began to expand again.
On the other hand, the official PMI for the sector, which is based on a much larger sample, fell to 49.2 in October, the lowest level since the start of the covid-19 pandemic and indicating activity still contracting.
Oceania
