In the 3 p.m. edition of the Tagesschau on Thursday, Helmut Kohl was suddenly Chancellor again. At least in the introduction by Claus-Erich Boetzkes. The news on Twitter reacted with humor.
Hamburg – Tuesday was Angela Merkel’s last day at work – after 16 years as Federal Chancellor. For some it is difficult to say goodbye, for others it is easy. One thing is certain: Germany is in the process of getting used to it. At the Tagesschau there was a surprising slip of the tongue on Thursday. Instead of Olaf Scholz, the moderator spoke from Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
The slip of the tongue in the news: time travel to the Kohl era
“Hello, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the news”, the presenter Claus-Erich Boetzkes began the news – as always. But immediately afterwards the slip of the tongue came: “It is really not a gentle introduction to the new federal government in times of the pandemic. Already on his first day at work, Chancellor Kohl connects with the Prime Ministers of the federal states. ”Helmut Kohl as Chancellor during the pandemic? Sounds like an exciting thought experiment. Of course, Boetzkes actually meant Angela Merkel’s successor, Olaf Scholz.
“The last century called and asked if everything was okay with Claus-Erich Boetzkes,” wrote a user on Twitter. The colleagues from the social media team at Tagesschau also took the slip of the tongue with humor. They shared the short excerpt with the comment “Like, whoever knows him” and the hashtags #Kohl and #Scholz:
Scholz instead of Kohl: Did the moderator notice his slip of the tongue?
It is not known whether the experienced journalist and presenter Claus-Erich Boetzkes himself noticed his mistake during the broadcast. He did take a little pause after saying Kohl, but then went on undeterred. The moderator himself had already announced in September that he wanted to retire at the end of the year. Boetzkes can look back on a long career and has moderated the Tagesschau since 1997. At that time, Helmut Kohl was really still Federal Chancellor.
