The State security forces, including the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Civil Guard and the Armed Forces, have begun to tighten the selection process to filter candidates with ultra-symbol tattoos. Although the regulations on tattoos in security forces have become more flexible in recent decades, it seems that tattoos with content linked to Nazism or that is associated with ultra movements contrary to democratic values have become grounds for immediate exclusion.
This change, reflected in the selection reports to which he has had access 324.catwould seek to maintain neutrality and respect for the rights that these bodies must guarantee.
In the case of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the selection test requires that applicants photograph and detail each of their tattoos. In the 2021 selection process, for example, two candidates were excluded for reasons of this type. One of them, a woman with a tattoo related to the far-right group Ultras Sur, was disqualified even though the tattoo was not visible. The authorities considered that the symbol reflected a direct connection with an ideology incompatible with the position.
According to data collected in Mossos selection tests in recent years, around 40% of applicants have tattoos, and the percentage is even higher among women.
The trend is not limited to the Catalan police. In the Spanish Army, the Ministry of Defense would also have begun in 2021 to examine the tattoos of applicants and has already excluded some candidates for wearing symbols that go against constitutional values. The Civil Guard also applies this exclusion protocol in its entry processes; In 2017, a candidate was rejected for having tattoos of ultra symbology.
Everything indicates that, although over time the controls have become less restrictive, as described, in cases where the content of the tattoo can be interpreted as radical or discriminatory, the exclusion remains immediate.
