Executive worked to modernize the Brazilian automotive sector and fought for the implementation of the Rota 2030 program
Engineer Antonio Megale, former president of the Anfavea (National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers). Born in Minas Gerais, he was hospitalized for cancer treatment.
Megale stood out for his work towards the modernization of the Brazilian automotive sector. As president of Anfavea from 2016 to 2019, he worked to implement Rota 2030, a program that established tax incentives for research, innovation and technological development projects for the automotive chain.
In a note, Anfavea called Megale “father of Rota 2030”. He says that “no one within the automotive sector fought harder than him so that this industrial policy, fundamental for the predictability and technological advancement of national vehicles, in several aspects, was implemented”. Here is the full statement of the entity (PDF – 107 kB).
In 2017, with the end of the Inovar-Auto program, the sector was left without specific incentive programs. The renewal of benefits would be carried out by Rota 2030, but the announcement was postponed several times by the government Michel Temer (MDB). The sector feared that the new regime would not get off the ground.
Megale worked intensely to implement the policy. The Anfavea note mentions a “travel marathon to Brasilia”. In one of them, the executive directly told Temer that all countries with a strong automotive industry adopt a policy of incentives for the sector, which justified the measure.
The program was officially announced in July 2018 and formally instituted in October of that year, when Temer signed, alongside Megale, at the opening of the Motor Show, a decree regulating its operation.
“This was possible because, in an extremely rare way, Antonio Megale from Minas Gerais managed to bring together two broad talents: a born negotiator and technical expert”stated Anfavea.
The executive was also president of AEA (Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering), from 2011 to 2014, and vice-president of Fiesp (Federation of Industries of São Paulo), from 2017 to 2021. Passed through the boards of car manufacturers Volkswagen, Renault It is Chrysler in Brazil.
Megale had a degree in mechanical engineering from UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro).
He leaves his wife Maysa and 2 sons, Bruno and Vitor. The burial took place this Saturday afternoon (Oct 14) at Parque Morumby Cemetery, in São Paulo.
