The general coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Antonio Maíllo, predicted this Monday that the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, “will have to leave sooner or later” due to his government’s management of the dana. “We can all agree that natural disasters may not be foreseen when they occur but what can be foreseen are humanitarian catastrophes,” he defended at an informative breakfast organized by Nueva Economía Fórum in which he assured that some political decisions “have caused deaths.” ”.
Maíllo has thus delved into the idea that his party has been defending for several days to ask the government of the Valencian Community to be accountable. “There has not been collaboration between governments because there has been no will in the Valencian government. The evidence is that while the central government develops actions, the Valencian government is entangled in justifying its poor performance. There is nothing more corrosive than a message in which each administration seeks to create a story,” the IU leader reasoned.
Although his party requested a few days after the tragedy began that the Government activate the State of Alarm to take control of the management, Maíllo considers that de facto Sánchez has taken command. “In the end, although the State of Alarm has not been declared, there has been a leading role of the central Government in the actions,” he considered, while regretting that in the first moments of the catastrophe the political sense of seeing who had the competencies. “When a person is in this situation, the least important thing is who has the competence for each thing. The actions were done,” he said.
Maíllo has also defended the measures that the central government is taking, although he has warned that they cannot be emergency instruments but must become structural tools. “The measures being taken are along the right lines but could be insufficient depending on how events develop. They cannot stop at urgent measures, they have to continue to be complemented with more structural measures because the damage will be long-term,” he said.
Celebrates the decision of Sumar’s spokesperson but asks for “more steps”
Maíllo also spoke about Sumar’s space and celebrated how the debate to elect the new parliamentary spokesperson, Verónica Martínez Barbero, has developed. This way of doing things believes that it can be a good path for the new stage of the political space, in which IU has asked for a new more democratic and horizontal relationship, after the “shock” due to the departure of Íñigo Errejón.
“We appeal that if we want to reconnect with people who have felt deeply disappointed, we have to do so with decision-making in relation to that shock. Let all the parts of the space that we now represent push to help and there we believe that all organizations have a fundamental role,” he said.
In this sense, he does not see it necessary to make changes, for example, in the structure of the Government or the role that Yolanda Díaz now represents as Minister of Labor, although he has criticized her management in other aspects. “Yolanda Díaz is now demonstrating that she is a magnificent Labor Minister. Nobody questions that. In other matters it needs to improve,” he said, making an analogy with school grades.
