More than eight years have passed since the Supersubmarina group suffered a serious traffic accident when colliding with a delivery van in August 2016. The consequences were devastating for both parties, having to undergo surgery in the hospital, where they remained admitted for many months for various injuries.
After months of silence from all the members of the band, in April 2024 it was published the book ‘Something that serves as light’, by journalist Fernando Navarro, who wrote after years of interviews with the four protagonists and everyone around them, summarizes the story of their success but also of the tragedy they went through.
Although since then there have not been many times that they have spoken publicly about their story, the different injuries suffered by the musicians and the driver of the delivery van were told. Specifically, two of the members of the musical group They were in a coma for several daysbut the worst part went to the singer, José Marín, known as Chino.
According to what he said in an interview with ‘El País’, Chino suffered serious brain injuries which made them have to learn to talk and walk again. The damage to his brain and the 31 days in a coma meant that Chino’s memory has completely erased the years in which he and the band gave concerts and released albums. “I I don’t know what it’s like to get on stage right now.. I’ve seen videos but I don’t remember what it’s like to be exactly there,” the singer said to his colleagues in the aforementioned interview.
Among the many physical and mental consequences for the Supersubmarina singer, there is one that stands out for its rarity, and that is that Chino is not fully aware of his illness. This is called anosognosia and then we will tell you more about it.
What is anosognosia?
According to a definition given by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM): «Anosognosia is a medical term that refers to the lack of awareness or recognition of a pathology or disability that affects a person. In other words, people who suffer from it may not be aware that they have a health problem or, at best, minimize their symptoms even when it is very obvious that they have a disease.
This type of condition is usually complex to diagnose and is usually associated with brain injuries or diseases such as Alzheimer’s, bipolar disorder, head trauma, stroke or schizophrenia. In the case of Chinese it is due to the multiple trauma suffered to the brain.
“Although anosognosia is generally associated with lesions in specific areas of the brain, such as the right parietal, temporoparietal, thalamic, or basal ganglia lobes, recent research suggests that this deficit may sometimes be related to more subtle changes in brain connectivity», indicates the same cited source.
It is important to highlight that this condition is caused by a physiological issue that is associated with organic damagein this case cerebral, and has nothing to do with a denial of reality in which the patient generates this situation through his thoughts.
