The Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, announced on Thursday that in the coming days the 2024 call for scholarships will be published for the preparation of oppositions to judicial and prosecutorial careers, to the body of Lawyers of the Administration of Justice and State Lawyers. Justice has defended, in a statement, that the scholarship program “constitutes one of the Ministry’s priorities for this legislature.” This is, the Ministry explains, “a fundamental measure to guarantee equal opportunities in access to the senior bodies of officials of the Administration of Justice.”
During his speech at the Plenary Session of the XXXI Conference of Deans of Law of Spain, held at the University of Cádiz, Bolaños requested the collaboration of the deans for the dissemination and publicity of these scholarships, a program that was launched It runs in 2022, during Pilar Llop’s time as minister and which therefore reaches its third edition. Bolaños has also claimed the relevance of the work of law schools in the training of both future operators in the legal field and citizens committed to the rule of law.
The Official State Gazette (BOE) has published this Friday the regulatory bases for the granting of these scholarships. “The granting of scholarships must be determined, to a large extent, by the income level of the applicants, with the purpose of attracting talent to the indicated legal professions, eliminating socioeconomic barriers that affect the principles of equality, merit and ability.” and limit access to these bodies,” the order states. To apply for aid, several requirements must be met, such as not enjoying other aid or subsidies for the same purpose, whether public or private; meet the requirements demanded in the last call for access to the Judicial and Prosecutorial Careers, to the Corps of Lawyers of the Administration of Justice or to the Corps of State Lawyers, respectively; and study the opposition under the direction of a specialized center, or one or more preparers.
In 2023, the Government tripled the amount and number of beneficiaries of the scholarship program for Justice opponents to reach 5.2 million euros for a total of 792 beneficiaries, compared to 1.6 million euros and 245 people receiving scholarships from 2022. In the last call, a total of 1,189 scholarship applications were submitted, 38% more than the previous year.
