Abu Dhabi (WAM)
The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2024 hosted a symposium on “Annual plans for publishing houses specializing in children’s literature…their foundations and methods for building them.” Dr. Fatima Al Mazrouei, a writer, publisher, university professor, and founder of the “Hikayat” library, told the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the sidelines of the symposium, that the plans are an initial vision of how children’s publishing houses will operate, explaining that the symposium focused on the goals set by each publishing house and the number of children’s publishing houses. The books she publishes and participates in, the challenges she faces, and the many opportunities available to her through exhibitions and meeting with publishers.
Build a reading habit
Dr. Fatima Al Mazrouei explained that she spoke at the symposium about how to build the reading habit in children, stressing that one of the challenges that children face is their relationship with electronics, and the excitement, visual and audio technologies in it that attract the child more than anything else.
She said, “Therefore, raising a child with the habit of reading begins with the parents practicing this habit, who are role models for the child, and committing to reading on a daily basis in places and times appropriate for reading,” noting that the child at an early stage will read with the parents, but as his developmental stages develop, he will begin reading alone. . She emphasized that during all these stages, what was read must be summarized, discussed, and discussed in his readings. Because all of this will contribute to building his reading habit.
Al Mazroui said that there is nothing wrong with electronic reading, but the child’s relationship with electronics must be regulated by determining appropriate times and days by creating a schedule for their use so that he is not preoccupied with them throughout the day, neglecting social communication with those around him, his school duties, and practicing a healthy lifestyle that limits the child’s maturity and enjoyment of life, and all of that. Without excess or negligence.
She added that as for the “Hikayat” library, it is divided into two wings: books and wooden toys, explaining that books must contain excitement and suspense, their vocabulary must be understood by the child and elevate him linguistically, their cover and drawings must be visually attractive, and the visual text must be parallel to the written text.
