While fishing in Upper Austria, a man was surprised by a wild animal and climbed to safety on a nearby wooden scaffolding.

Feldkirchen – An angler in Austria literally had a rude awakening while fishing a few days ago. At around four o'clock in the morning, the man spotted a wild animal at the Feldkirchner bathing lakes – approx. 20 kilometers west of the state capital Linz – and promptly fled. According to the angler, the wild animal was said to be a wolf that was almost 70 meters away from him on the shore of the lake.

Angler surprised by wolf in Austria – escape ends on wooden scaffolding

According to the report, the angler's escape ended on a wooden scaffolding in the nearby Feldkirchen motor skills park, where he sought protection from the wild animal. In view of the incident, hunting director Franz Allerstorfer announced that he would set up game cameras in the area around the Feldkirchner bathing lakes to confirm the sighting. The state's wolf management has already noted the sighting as an incident. The hunter described the location of the sighting as atypical. “Wolves tend to be shy of people. Normally they should give settlements and people a wide berth,” said Allerstorfer MyDistrict.at.

Encounters between wolves and humans are rare and are usually peaceful. This is mainly due to the animals' rather shy nature. The angler from the Feldkirchen bathing lakes also escaped with horror at the end of his escape. Hunting director Allerstorfer recommends the residents of the region to “be careful, but keep calm”. However, dog owners should remember to keep their animals on a leash.

Wolves repeatedly spotted in the Alpine region – expert reassures

There have been repeated sightings of wolves in recent months. A case in Italy caused a stir in February, among other things, when a wolf got lost on a ski slope and was chased by a skier. But there was also another spectacular wolf sighting in Upper Austria just a few days ago. A cell phone video showed a wolf running across a street near the middle school in Sankt Georgen an der Gusen and almost being hit by two cars. This was reported by the portal today.at.

However, behavioral biologist Kurt Kotrschal sees no reason for alarm in the sightings: “This is nothing unusual and it is not true that there is danger associated with it,” Kotrschal told the news agency APA. (fd)
