cWith more than 98 million voters called to the polls and more than 20,000 public positions at stake, Mexico celebrates this Sunday the largest general elections in the country’s history.
The current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador faces the end of his six-year term as president, which will also be the shortest in history so far.
The reason? A reform of article 83 of the Mexican constitution, the same one that determines the duration of the position, modified the start date of the mandate in 2019.
In this sense, the new standard establishes that The president-elect will take office on the 1st. of October and not the 1st. from December, as was done previously.
So this 2024 will be the first time in ten years that a president leaves power two months early and, therefore, concludes his term without serving six years.
I do not aspire to be the highest chief, moral leader, or leader, much less a chief. At the end of September I retire. Generational change is guaranteed, I leave with a clear conscience
“I do not aspire to be the top boss, moral leader, or leader, much less a chief. At the end of September I will retire. Generational change is guaranteed, I leave with a clear conscience,” he stated on March 14 in a conference from Baja California , a state in northern Mexico.
This, however, is not the only reason why these elections differ from others in the country and acquire special relevance.

For this reason, and for the first time after many unsuccessful attempts in the past, It is more than likely that a woman will be president of Mexico.
The most violent electoral process
The attacks and murders of candidates for public office have marked the pre-campaign and the presidential campaign, since, according to data from the federal government, 15 candidates have died since October; The organization Data Cívica raises the figure, for all of 2024, to 26 and the consulting firm DataInt, which starts in July 2023, to 38.
