The national spokesperson for the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), Ana Pontonthis morning demanded unity around the project he leads to achieve what in his opinion should be the priority objective of the formation in the coming years: ending the almost absolute power of the Popular Party in Galicia and reaching the Government of the Xunta in the Galician elections scheduled for 2028, to put the autonomous Administration at the disposal of the interests of the country and its social majorities.
Pontón addressed the members of his party in the opening speech of the assembly that the nationalist formation is holding that Sunday in Santiago, and in which he will presumably renew his leadership, which he has been exercising since 2016. With her at the helm, the BNG has steadily expanded its support until last February it achieved the best results in its history in regional elections.
The national spokesperson defended the work of his executivewhich has achieved, he said, a stronger party in all aspects, especially “in the organizational, social and electoral aspects”, and that has managed to broaden the profile of Galician citizens who support nationalism.
He noted this by also thanking the collective work of a committed militancy that “has never given up, not even in the most critical moments,” and especially to the nationalist women, to which he attributed much of the “spectacular” progress that the BNG has recorded in recent years.
For decades, the profile of the Bloc voter was limited to the fishing grounds of traditional supports of the left sovereignist to the left of the PSOE, but today it has extended to the liberal and conservative Galician electorate, from the center and even from the right.
Pontón called to influence that “different way of doing politics” that has led the BNG to consolidate itself as the only feasible alternative to unseat the PP from power in Galicia, “a firm but friendly line focused on the problems and aspirations of society,” he said.
In that sense, the leader of the Block reiterated the idea that the BNG must take advantage of your strength to continue expanding his electoral base until he achieves the presidency of the Xunta.
“At this historical moment there is nothing more revolutionary than reaching the Government” he noted, to end the PP policies -the Feijóo and Rueda formation has governed Galicia uninterruptedly since 2009- which it considers harmful to Galicia: “Stop the plunder [de recursos naturales y productivos]normalize the language, put the country to production and achieve an economic agreement or a new nation status to improve the lives of Galicians,” he said.
Pontón wants the Bloc to close ranks with its project, and although no one doubts that it will win this congress by a long shot, has not been able to reach a consensus list with the other two candidates that are presented: that of the regional representative Noa Presas, at the head of En movemento, and that of the local spokesperson of Mos (Pontevedra), Gustavo Barcia, who heads the Alicerce movement.
The two have assured that their projects, which they will present to the militancy in a few minutes, are alternative but not opposites to that of Pontón, and based on the “comradeship” and “plurality” of the party, in the words of Presas.
While it is true that his presence reveals a certain internal, minority but organized opposition to Pontón’s leadership, which could seem questioned, it is also true that in a certain way, benefits his image as the head of a party in which the congresses are not won over in the Bulgarian way, nor by laminating dissent, but rather resolving democratically the differences and subjecting them to the assessment of the militancy, as will be done this afternoon.
