A New York Judge blocked on Tuesday the deportation of a 21 -year -old student from Columbia University for participating in proper marches, second case of students detained for that reason and that they risk deportation.
Federal Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald failed on Wednesday that the student Yunseo Chung, born in South Korea and legal resident in the United States (where he arrived with 7 years of age) cannot be arrested because “There is no evidence that it can be a danger to the community”according to several local media.
It was Chung who denounced the government on Monday after knowing that the immigration police (the already famous ICE) looked for her both in her residence within Columbia and at her parents’ house, claiming that His immigration status had been revokedan argument that has already used to chase other pro -palestine activists.
As the Gothamist portal recalls, Chung was what can be called a low profile activist, very different from the case of Mahmoud Khalil, the student of Palestinian origin who led the protests in Columbia against the war in Gaza and who remains arrested. According to Donald Trump’s administration, Khalil has links with the Palestine Militia Hamás, something that has not yet been demonstrated.
Khalil’s arrest has generated a deep concern not only among the proportions, but also among the defenders of freedoms, because it supposes The criminalization of non -violent protests in the United States.
