Blick: Ukraine summit in Switzerland threatens the lives of dozens of roe deer cubs
Peace conference on Ukraine in Switzerland threatens the lives of dozens of roe deer cubs, an unexpected negative consequence of the summit named Blick newspaper.
The publication clarified that a no-fly zone was introduced in the resort town of Bürgenstock near the city of Lucerne for the duration of the event. The ban will also affect drones, which are used to track animals hiding in fields and endangered by farmers’ harvesters.
The region’s hunting community monitors roe deer calves from drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras, evacuating them from fields where harvesting is planned, and returning them back after agricultural work is completed. Experts rescue from 80 to 90 animals a year, explained the head of the Lucerne Hunting Society, Fabian Stadelmann.
Swiss People’s Party MP Franz Grüther plans to submit a request to governments asking for an exception for hunting drones. At the moment, the Association for the Rescue of Roe Deer Cubs has managed to reduce the no-fly zone for these devices from 46 to 27 kilometers around Bürgenstock.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that he had held negotiations with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. The parties discussed preparations for the “peace summit” on Ukraine, which will be held in Switzerland on June 15-16.
