August and September floods
The UN report indicated that 231,000 people were affected during the months of August and September, with the end of the flood season, which hit several governorates and regions in Yemen, since the start of the rainy season, which caused torrential torrents and thunderstorms.
He said that the proportion of floods decreased in several governorates, compared to the months of July and August, when heavy rains caused severe flooding in large areas across the country.
He added, despite this decrease, the floods hit hard areas in the governorates of Marib and Hajjah, in which thousands of families were affected.
Marib is the worst affected
An estimated 231,000 people, or 33,000 families, were affected by floods in 120 districts affiliated to 14 Yemeni governorates during the period between August 25 and September 18, bringing the total number of families verified since May 2022 to 73,000 families, the report said. Most of them are in displacement sites.
The report indicated that about 5,000 families were affected in the Marib governorate alone, after the floods destroyed the camps for the displaced, while more than 28,000 families were distributed among 13 governorates, the majority of which are under the control of the Houthis.
During the month of August, more than 80 percent of the country experienced heavy rainfall with a cumulative amount of about 2,500 millimeters, which is 45 percent higher than the amount of rain that the country witnessed during the same period last year 2021, according to the report.
He pointed out that 132 roads, 80 water sources, 52 schools and health centers, and 10 dams and water tanks were damaged since the beginning of the flood season, while there were no reports of any infrastructure being affected by the Executive Unit for the internally displaced during the reporting period.
Flood retreat
The report pointed out that the agrometeorological early warning bulletin issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the first ten days of September indicated that a small number of Yemeni governorates received (100 mm) of cumulative rain, in reference to the slowdown in the amount of rain and the end of the rainy season. floods.
The United Nations called for more support to confront the floods in Yemen and rehabilitate the damage, in light of the urgent need to enhance preparedness activities and flexible construction to prepare society for the upcoming flood season, while mitigating the potential impacts.
In early August, the United Nations announced the death of 77 people as a result of heavy rains and torrential rains in Yemen, and more than 35,000 Yemeni families were affected in 85 districts in 16 out of 22 Yemeni governorates due to an air depression coming from the Arabian Sea.
