The President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed this Monday that his son Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran He will compete for a position in the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), although he did not specify which position.
At his morning press conference at the National Palace, the president also expressed that his other older sons, Gonzalo and José Ramón, will not work in Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, and both have expressed this to her.
“My children and I made an agreement a long time ago, and I am very grateful to them, because they have respected it, that as long as I was a leader or a public servant, they would not work in the government, and they have kept to it. They have helped me a lot in that and they also help me voluntarily, but they are not civil servants, they do not work in the government and they are already grown up,” said the head of the Executive.
But one has to be consistent, President López Obrador said, if I accepted nepotism, cronyism, influence peddling, corruption, I would have no moral authority and anyone would disrespect me. They disrespect me but because they are angry, without reason.”
Last week, Morena national councilors in Tabasco announced their support for the candidacy of Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, one of the President’s sons, for the position of General Secretary of the party, along with the candidacy of Luisa María Alcalde Luján at the head.
“I take this opportunity to inform you that José Ramón, as he has told me, is not going to work in the government; Gonzalo neither. Andrés will, but not in the government. He is going to participate in Morena, he wants to help consolidate Morena. I am not going to influence anything, but he does want to participate in Morena,” said the president.
“Yes, he will participate, he proposed that to me, and he wants to be elected, that is, not imposed, and I have nothing to do with that. Yes, I want to fulfill the promise that I will retire, because they are free, because imagine if at home they always heard, since they were children, the word justice, democracy, and political activity always.”
López Obrador thanked his children for their understanding and support, and recalled the scandals that Carlos Loret de Mola has published about alleged business dealings with companies.
“Imagine the scandal that Loret de Mola made, that my children were involved in business in the Mayan Train, a complete lie. They have never participated in any company that has to do with the government. That they sold ballast or recommended that construction materials be purchased from certain companies, false,” said the head of the Executive.
“They had a relationship with a businessman who sold at high prices to contractors because they said that was where Andy or Gonzalo got a kickback, false. They have never been involved in corruption scandals, pure inventions of these slanderous frauds, mercenaries who, because it affected me, went against them.”
Support for Andy Lopez Beltran
Morena leader in Tabasco, Joaquín Baños, publicly announced last week his support for the candidacy of López Beltrán, known as “Andy”, as part of a ticket that would include Mayor Luján, current Secretary of the Interior.
According to Baños, this duo represents continuity and solidity within the party, with the mission of strengthen the Fourth Transformation.
“We are going with the slogan that, as Tabasco residents, we are going to support another Tabasco resident, and what better than the son of our current President of the Republic, and also Luisa María Alcalde, a young fighter, from the left, who with great merit is going to be at the head of Brunette for the next three years,” Baños said in Villahermosa.
Support within Morena for Andy
Support for López Beltrán is not limited to Tabasco. Raúl Ojeda, national advisor to Morena, also highlighted the suitable profile of the son of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to occupy the position of General Secretary.
Ojeda stressed that Andy has grown up in an environment of social commitment, which makes him an ideal figure to continue the efforts to transform the party and the country.
“It’s not a bad suggestion. Andy has always been involved in the causes of transformation; he has the profile to lead alongside Alcalde,” said Ojeda, who also highlighted the political training that López Beltrán received from a young age within his family.
Controversies and business ties
Although López Beltrán has maintained a relatively low profile in media terms, his influence on Morena and on federal government decisions has been widely commented on.
Various reports, such as those by the organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), have pointed out his close relationship with businessmen who have obtained public contracts, which has generated suspicions about his possible involvement in conflicts of interest.
One of the most notable cases is the relationship with businessman Alejandro Castro, who was linked to the construction of the Villahermosa boardwalk.
Both Andy and his brother Gonzalo López Beltrán have been accused of favoring certain friendly businessmen in public works contractsHowever, both have emphatically denied any involvement, arguing that the contracts were awarded legally and transparently.
