President Andrés Manuel López Obrador admitted that the Amnesty law, recently approved in the Senate of the Republic, could favor Israel Vallartawho has been imprisoned for more than 17 years for the case Florence Cassez.
On April 17, the Chamber of Senators approved the ruling so that the head of the Federal Executive can grant the benefit of amnesty directly, without being subject to the established procedure, to people prosecuted, sentenced or against whom criminal action has been taken. and that provide verifiable elements that are useful to know the truth of the facts in cases that are relevant to the Mexican State.
“The purpose is that with this law it can be guaranteed that people who have information and contribute it, on cases such as the disappearance of the young people from Ayotzinapa, can be rewarded if they inform, if they help us find the young people from Ayotzinapa , through an amnesty, in the event that they were detained,” said the president in his morning press conference at the National Palace.
“That they be given that opportunity because there are issues where things are closed, there is no information, silences are agreed upon, there are silence pacts. So let them help. And I take advantage of this to spread the word that there is possibly going to be this law so that whoever wants to help us, in the Ayotzinapa case and in other cases, support us.
Questioned about whether this amnesty law could also apply to Israel Vallartathe President responded that it applies in all cases, but fundamentally for those who help clarify matters related to the violation of human rights.
“And if in that case there is a violation of human rights, as it has also been proven to exist, it could be applied,” stressed the chief executive.
“And that it does not depend on whether they are sentenced or not, because that is a delay, there are those who have been unjustly imprisoned for 15 or 20 years, without a sentence, and the current Amnesty law does not apply, because it has to take effect once there is a sentence “.
López Obrador pointed out that it is very difficult to talk to judges and magistrates, so that they can resolve, so that there are sentences, because there is a delay in this matter.
This new law now allows, when there is a valid justification, to release a person, the president noted.
He pointed out that since the sentence against Israel Vallarta has not been resolved, or there are others pending, it cannot be applied.
“But there is the will on our part, we do not want to keep innocent people in jail, in prison, and we have already freed many, sick, poor indigenous people who do not have anything to defend themselves, who they never had, and who are also innocent, but We want to advance further,” said the man from Tabasco.
Amnesty Law
President López Obrador said that the law can help because there is surely information in all cases, when it is a matter of justice, of giving peace of mind to relatives of the deceased and missing, and it is a humanitarian matter.
“We have to do everything within our power, of course, our adversaries, who are very elementary and have bad thoughts, act in bad faith, they think that we are going to use that law to act in an authoritarian manner and free criminals in power and that we are going to decide arbitrarily,” said the president.
“We have never done it, the purpose is for us to move forward to resolve pending issues, like the Ayotzinapa case, for us to do it together, that's what it's for.”
So, López Obrador added, we will see what results, and I am sure that we can have more information in all cases, especially human rights violations.
García Luna Case
In the morning conference, the President was questioned about the delay in the United States in the sentencing of the former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna.
“It is a political issue because, since so much time passes and they do not resolve it in the United States, it is very likely that they are waiting for the elections to pass. But they are decisions that they make and we respect,” declared López Obrador.
And then he referred to the State Department report on human rights that indicates that Mexico has not attended to the 2023 cases.
“They are not used to respecting the sovereignty of the people; yesterday, for example, the State Department issued a resolution saying that human rights are violated in Mexico, and they position themselves as the judges of the world,” he said.
“We are respectful to them, they should be respectful to us. We don't tell them why you have a candidate harassing him in court, and why you allocate billions of dollars for war.”
And why don't you release Julian Assange, who has been unjustly imprisoned, López Obrador continued, and why don't you take care of the young people in the United States who die from addiction to drugs, to fentanyl, and why do you repress and mistreat the migrants.
We do not issue a letter of good conduct because it is not our responsibility, but they were left with the mania of 200 years ago, from the Monroe doctrinesaid the President.
