Tens of thousands of people braved freezing temperatures to participate in the 51st March for Life in the United States, this Friday. The demonstration took place in central Washington, amid a blizzard.
In 2024, the March for Life completed 51 years. The first edition of the event took place in 1973, shortly after the Supreme Court decision that prevented states from banning abortion. The trial, which became known as Roe x Wade, was reversed in 2022.
Now, after the Supreme Court victory, pro-life activists are trying to block states from passing measures that make abortion easier. The 2022 ruling did not ban abortion in the United States; it just returned the matter to the state level.
This year, Macha pela Vida's motto was “With every woman, for every child”. The march called for the expansion of pregnancy support centers, especially those that help mothers with unplanned pregnancies.
The president of the House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, spoke at the event. Among the participants was also American football coach Jim Harbaugh, recently crowned national champion at the University of Michigan.
The march also had a speech by the Brazilian Antonio de Mello, who coordinates the Jesus Menino Community, in Petrópolis (RJ). The place is a home for children with disabilities.
