America’s Army: Proving Grounds had been used in the past for recruiting.
The US military has announced the closure of the controversial video game America’s Army. Originally released in 2002 and with several chapters, America’s Army was developed with Unreal Engine and was used as a soldier recruiting tool.
The last chapter, America’s Army: Proving Groundsit will shut down its servers on May 5th. As explained by the managers in an official post, the game “it represented the U.S. government’s first large-scale use of video game technology as a platform for strategic communications and recruitment, and the first use of video game technology to support U.S. military recruitment. In total, America’s Army has been played by over 20 million users, participating in 180 million successfully completed missions.“.
“Time has passed and America’s Army has fulfilled its mission, so now is the time to focus our efforts on other new and innovative ways to assist the military with their communications and recruitment.“.
For the PlayStation version the store page will be removed shortly and the game will no longer be available for purchase. The online will stop working on the date indicated, although users who have the game will be able to continue playing offline. For the PC version, the private servers will still be accessible, but the official servers and player stats will stop working on May 5th.
