Chihuahua, Chih.- The president of the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA) in Chihuahua, Antonio Moisés Morales, described as negative for the formal economy the statements of the mayor of Juárez, Cruz Pérez Cuéllar, and of Senator Juan Carlos Loera, in relation to requesting that the regularization of used foreign vehicles continue and become a permanent process.
The car dealers’ representative recommended that officials focus on improving public transport, which is the responsibility of the authorities.
Public transport, he said, should be efficient and safe, which is a right of all citizens.
Moisés Morales previously pointed out that the decree promoting the regularization of used vehicles of foreign origin has significantly affected the northern region of the country.
Since the decree came into effect on January 19, 2022, until June 24, 2024, 2 million 358 thousand 231 vehicles have been regularized in the country. Chihuahua, Tamaulipas and Baja California account for 51% of the total.
In the case of Chihuahua, 417,323 cars were registered as regularized by June 24, ranking first in vehicle regularization. The president of the AMDA has pointed out that with the various extensions that have been made since the end date of the decree, the excessive entry of junk vehicles from the United States through smuggling has been encouraged, causing damage to the national vehicle fleet, in addition to the safety of roads and drivers and the assets of citizens who own Mexican cars.
The consequences for the automotive sector have been noticeable, he said, with an estimated 10% to 12% reduction in new vehicle sales in the country and 20% in the state, as well as a decrease in the value of national vehicles of up to 50%.
In August, new car sales in the city fell 12% compared to the same period last year, marking seven consecutive months of declines.
Upon the expiration of the decree that promotes the regularization of vehicles of foreign origin on September 30, the mayor of Juárez indicated that he will request that it continue in the border city and considered the convenience of establishing definitive rules to avoid depending on a decree.
