A year ago AMD introduced a latency reduction technology in direct competition with NVIDIA’s Reflex. AntiLag+, this is the name of the technology, however, immediately highlighted problems with the games’ anti-cheat systems, because it was implemented at the driver level and therefore modified the game files themselves. This led to numerous bans, while Reflex, integrated into the games in collaboration with the developers, has never had these problems.
AMD has since had to withdraw support for Anti-Lag+ from its drivers, at least until today. The company has indeed announced Radeon Anti-Lag 2, a new version that instead of following the old driver-level integration technique, is integrated within the game files. This means that support will be specific to each title and the feature will not be supported by all games. While this may seem like a disadvantage, the upside will be that using Radeon Anti-Lag 2 will now not lead to bans in online games.
The new course of AMD technology as a technical preview starts again from Counter Strike 2i.e. from the first game in which problems with the previous Anti-Lag+ technology were reported.
“With Radeon Anti-Lag 2 technology integrated into the game, frame alignment is also applied in the game code itself and works in conjunction with driver-controlled CPU pacing to enable better frame synchronization,” AMD wrote . “This leads to even lower click-to-response latency than a driver-only solution like Radeon Anti-Lag. Since Radeon Anti-Lag 2 is an in-game technology, it requires game developers to add it to their games, with Counter-Strike 2 being the first.”
Benchmarks and compatibility
AMD also showed off various benchmarks of its Radeon RX 7000 GPUs and Radeon 700M iGPUs that offer significantly improved latency compared to the previous version of Anti-Lag. Radeon Anti-Lag 2 technology is reported to lead to an average latency reduction of 37% compared to no Anti-Lag enabled.
In terms of compatibility, it appears that AMD has further expanded support for Radeon Anti-Lag 2 over Anti-Lag+, which now works on Radeon RX 5000 or better GPUs and also on Ryzen 6000 or better CPU products. Radeon Anti-Lag 2 is included in the latest AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.5.1 driver package, and the latest update for Counter-Strike 2 that supports it is already live on Steam.
Finally, AMD also plans a Radeon Anti-Lag 2 SDK, designed for GPUOpen game developers and the company also promises support for more games in the future.
