The latest patch for ROCm confirms the existence of the new AMD Navi 48 GPU that will be equipped on the Radeon RX 8000 series.
We have already talked about it in the last few days, AMD Navi 48 it is one of the two chips based on RDNA 4 architecture that will be equipped on the next-gen graphics cards of the Radeon RX 8000 series. Although taken for granted, the existence of this chip (along with the lesser version Navi 44) was the result of speculation.
Now the patches for ROCm, AMD's opensource platform that allows developers to optimize applications for GPUs, directly bring into play Navi 48, which seems to have officially entered the testing phase in the laboratories.
What do we know?
Unfortunately, at the moment the ROCm GitHub doesn't seem to care much about the existence of the new AMD GPU with RDNA 4 architecture. Navi 48 should still be the more performing of the two chips that will populate the new graphics cards of the red company and will be intended for the top products of range.
Unlike the Navi 31 series with RDNA 3 and Navi 21 with RDNA 2, however, AMD has decided to change strategy, without aiming for the high end: the latest rumors in fact speak of performance comparable to that of Navi 31which will aim to compete in the medium-high segment of the market with a competitive quality/price ratio.
RDNA 4 will then be a completely renewed architecture compared to the past and AMD could aim to optimize Ray Tracing performance (on which it currently remains behind its competitor NVIDIA) and to implement new technologies related to artificial intelligence more in line with the green house's DLSS.
A few numbers
As we mentioned, there is little information about RDNA 4. The new generation of AMD GPUs should bring a gift support for GDDR7 memories with 28 and 32 Gbps bandwidth and 16 GB denominations. Precisely by virtue of maintaining costs, however, the American company could opt for the cheaper GDDR6, at least according to the latest rumors.
On the design front, the new chips should generally be smaller and characterized by a monolithic structure, abandoning the newly introduced MCD design. In recent days, important news has also emerged on the new processors of the red house, the AMD Granite Ridge CPUs could be around the corner.
