After the success of Fallout, the streaming giant Amazon has revealed the arrival of a new live-action television series based on “Tomb Raider”. The series will be produced in collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve”, in the role of screenwriter and executive producer, thus confirming the rumors that have been circulating since last year. “Tomb Raider” is no stranger to live-action adaptations. In the early 2000s, Angelina Jolie played the courageous adventuress Lara Croft in the films “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life”. The films were box office successes and are viewed more favorably by critics today than when they were released, especially when compared to other video game adaptations of the time such as “Doom”, “Silent Hill” and “Max Payne”. In 2018, the film saga was relaunched, with Alicia Vikander in the role of Lara Croft, in line with the relaunch of the video game series.
With the release of the “Fallout” series which exceeded 65 million viewers, Amazon has demonstrated its ability to create excellent adaptations of video games. Furthermore, the success of other series adapted from comics and novels such as “The Boys”, “Gen V” and “Invincible” highlights the streaming service’s ability to transform stories from different media into successful television products. Phoebe Waller-Bridge herself expressed her excitement in an Amazon press release, saying: “Lara Croft means a lot to me, as it does to many others, and I can’t wait to embark on this adventure. Bats included.” Amazon will also take care of the next video game adaptation of Tomb Raider, after Square Enix gave up the rights to the franchise in 2022.
