Colombian sport is going through a very difficult time. The issue of the delivery of money to the sports federations is a major inconvenience that has almost paralyzed the activity, But this big problem also concerns doping control, a program that has not been able to be executed in 2024 and is already in its fifth month.
The most complicated thing is that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has its sights on the country, since to date it has not been possible to carry out any doping control due to lack of money that the Ministry of Sports must transfer.
In the middle of the year of the Olympic Games, there are several of the country’s athletes classified who have not been controlled during the season, since the program has not been able to develop. Very few sports federations have collaborated.
Some federations have had to pay for controls out of their pocket
This entity invested $130,933,250 from its budget to manage the anti-doping program last year. Fedeciclismo has completed the collection of samples and analysis in authorized laboratories.
It was learned that WADA is closely following the case and knows that to date in Colombia it has not been possible to carry out the plan that was in place for doping controls.
The AMA is strict in asking countries to work on the controls, it rigorously monitors the work and when they realize that here in Colombia the issue has been abandoned and work has not begun, they could take action on the matter.
There are some ‘Top’ Colombian athletes who have been required by the anti-doping authorities, but not from the country. Those in charge of monitoring the analyzes have been the spring of their own federations, a clear example, Egan Bernal.
However, There is a group of high-performance athletes classified for the Paris Olympics who must be controlled by the Colombian office, but due to the inconvenience of the lack of money, they have not been required for sample collection and respective analysis, as is the case of the boxer Ingrit Valencia or the athlete Mateo Romero.
