Alpine risked the catastrophe
There Alpine two races ago in Miami they celebrated their first point of the season thanks to Esteban Ocon, yesterday in Monaco Pierre Gasly also came to the fore, but the French team lost a position in the Constructors’ standings thanks to Alexander Albon’s ninth place which allows Williams to overtake Alpine despite both being on equal points.
The French team’s race could have ended immediately due to the risk Esteban Ocon took in trying to overtake his teammate Pierre Gasly at the Portier. The contact between the two wheels caused Ocon’s Alpine to take off and he was unable to restart, Gasly had the car damaged, but he nevertheless completed the ‘mission’ of not losing the point earned with Saturday’s performance in Qualification. The Stewards have decided to sanction Ocon with a five-place starting grid penalty in Canada.
“I made a mistake and I apologize to the whole team for the accident and the retirement. In the end, the team scored points as we had aimed for and this is the most important thing for our ambitions. The damage to my car was too extensive to restart the race, despite the team’s efforts during the red flag stop. Mistakes happen and we move on.” Ocon’s words. “If we had made the most of Q3, more points probably would have been possible – said Gasly – as a team we will review many things. After the red flag, the race was very calm and it was just a matter of managing the tires and the pace until the checkered flag.”
