2023: Alonso's results
The first season of Fernando Alonso in Aston Martin, with the Spaniard taking to the track at the age of 42, it proved to be a real success for the two-time world champion, author of well eight podiums conquered. Furthermore, the former Ferrari player obtained six of these in the first half of the world championship, only to then have to deal with a collapse in the performance of the AMR23 during the single-seater upgrade phase, which was only partially resolved towards the end of the championship.
Victory was missing
It was in this last phase that the Asturian was the protagonist of other standing ovation performances, even if the long-awaited victory did not come. On more than one occasion, Alonso has underlined his desire to complete his own “Mission 33”that is, the personal goal of achieving the 33rd victory in his career, as well as the first since the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix. An objective that he will try to achieve at the next world championship, even if Alonso's qualities have not taken a backseat in the slightest.
Alonso's strong point
Among many, it was also the former pilot who recognized him Karun Chandhok, now engaged in the role of television commentator in Great Britain. According to the 39-year-old, in fact, the #14 has always demonstrated all his talent regardless of the potential of the car: “When I try to evaluate drivers, the important thing is see who maximizes the package the most – he explained in the podcast of Sky Sports F1 – so for me, I think it is that's where Fernando gains points. Maximizes the car's full potential. They started the season very well up until the Spanish GP, so much so that Aston Martin was about half a second behind Red Bull, which was a big gain.”
The energy of a younger driver
Contrary to other teams such as McLaren, who have significantly increased their potential with the new packages, the same did not apply to Aston Martin, which also lost ground to Mercedes and Ferrari until relegated to fifth position in the Constructors' championship . Despite this, Alonso managed to complete real feats such as 2nd place in Zandvoortin the rain, and the 3rd in Brazil at the end of a spectacular battle with Perez: “There was a lot of talk about the front wing and things like that – continued Chandhok – maybe it influenced them too, but if you look at the statistics from Spain onwards, the average qualifying figure dropped to eight tenths compared to Red Bull. There was a substantial change after Barcelona, but Fernando still competed in races like the one in Holland, for example, where he was rained out and had the opportunity to think creatively and strategically and ended up on the podium. Then he defeated Checo in Brazil, and I think that just shows that he still has the energy of a 22 year old, not a 42. For me, she had a great season, it was exceptional“.
