The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has defended that in the capital “a tourist tax is not necessary” and this possibility is not being considered. in addition to influencing its commitment to “low fiscal pressure.”
This was expressed within the framework of the breakfast series ‘The Happiness Industry’, organized by the Hotusa Group under the title ‘Tourism as an engine of growth for cities’, along with his Malaga counterpart, Francisco de la Torre, who does defend this rate in his city.
Specifically, the councilor of Malaga has stressed the importance of creating a “legal security framework at the national level” with a tourist tax on homes of this type, and the amount of which could be allocated to “subsidize rents for family members in a situation of social crisis”.
Almeida, in his speech, stressed that tourismphobia “has no echo” in Madrid, which understands tourism as an “engine of growth”although he has indicated that the proliferation of tourist homes must be addressed, since “30% of tourists spend the night” in them, in addition to underlining his commitment to a “high-impact” tourism model.
The Madrid brand
They have also addressed in this conversation the brand image that Madrid may have, in which the mayor of Madrid has indicated that there are “very different” opinions. “Once I was meeting with the Villa Chroniclers and I asked them:For you, what is the icon of Madrid? One said the Puerta de Alcalá; another, Cibeles, the Prado Museum...”, he expressed.
He considers that the concept of Madrid is “an intangible” and the concept of the city itself, which is “seated in the international imagination” as a city “safe, pleasant and with a good offer of leisure, culture and quality of life.” .
