All the coaches and sports directors who have passed through Chivas during the time of Amaury Vergara

Through its social networks, Chivas de Guadalajara shared a statement in which it confirmed that Fernando Hierro will not continue as sports director of the institution. The Spanish manager will go to football in Saudi Arabia to work with Al-Nassr.

In its statement, the Sacred Flock thanked Hierro for his work, for laying the foundations for his project and wished him luck in his future projects.

Unfortunately for Chivas de Guadalajara, this is not something new in the institution. The red and white team has experienced several changes in sports directors and coaches throughout history; This became more acute during the Vergara era (both with Jorge Vergara and Amaury).

Amaury Vergara assumed control of Chivas de Guadalajara in November 2019 after the death of his father. During his era, the Flock has had projects with two different sports directors:

Ricardo Peláez arrived at Chivas de Guadalajara in January 2020. The manager arrived at the red-and-white institution to return to the club to the forefront of Mexican soccer after having a good time in América and Cruz Azul. After not achieving the objectives set, Peláez left the Sacred Flock in October 2022. The last nail in his coffin was the elimination in the playoffs in the Apertura 2022. During this journey, Chivas played in the quarterfinals twice, once in the semifinals, and was eliminated in play-offs twice. Peláez was also harshly criticized for hiring reinforcements that did not work.

Fernando Hierro arrived at the Rebaño as a replacement for Ricardo Peláez in October 2022. The manager had signed a three-year contract with the option of one more, however, he decided to leave for Saudi Arabia before fulfilling his contract. His management was characterized by betting on a pair of technicians (Paunovic and Gago) who did not have experience in Liga MX. Likewise, he had a firm hand to sanction elements such as Alexis Vega and Cristian Calderón. His legacy can also include the rescue and promotion of the red-and-white basic forces. In this journey, Chivas reached a final, a semifinal and a quarterfinal.

‘Flaco’ Tena assumed the technical direction of Chivas for the Apertura 2019 and was dismissed in the Guardianes 2020. The experienced strategist only led the club for 20 games, achieving seven wins, eight draws and six losses.

In August 2020, Víctor Manuel Vucetich took the reins of Chivas after the departure of Tena. ‘King Midas’ managed to qualify the rojiblancos to the league in Guardianes 2020. After 43 games at the head of the club he was dismissed. He had 16 wins, 16 draws and 11 losses. He was fired in Apertura 2021 after nine dates. Although his numbers were not bad, the board did not agree with his defensive style.

The Mexican coach took over as interim after Vucetich’s dismissal. He directed between the Apertura 2021 and the Clausura 2022. In total he directed 22 games; He won only five games, drew eight and had nine defeats. He was eliminated in the playoffs against Puebla.

In April 2022, Ricardo Cadena arrived as interim coach after the dismissal of Michel Leaño. He coached a total of 18 matches, with only five wins, eight draws and five losses. He was fired in October 2022, after being eliminated by Puebla in the play-offs. This was the last coach of the Ricardo Peláez era, who also left the institution after this failure.

After the arrival of Fernando Hierro as sports director, Paunovic was appointed as the new Chivas strategist. The Serbian had no knowledge of Mexican soccer, but he led the Flock to the grand final in his first tournament, in Clausura 2023. In his second tournament, he led the team to the quarterfinals. The European coach left the institution after differences with the board. He left very positive numbers with Chivas: 21 wins, eight draws and 13 losses in 42 games coached.

Fernando Gago arrived at Chivas for Clausura 2024. The Argentine coach went from less to more this season and managed to qualify the team to the semifinals, although the team was eliminated in the round of 16 of Concachampions. In 25 games they have 13 wins, six draws and six losses.
