“The problem of renewing Belmadi’s contract with the national team was not raised. It will remain until the 2026 World Cup,” Zvezev said in an interview with Algerian radio on Friday.
Belmadi, who led Algeria to winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, imposed himself at the head of the “Desert Foxes” since taking office in 2018.
Before that, the former international midfielder oversaw the Qatar national team and Al Duhail FC.
Belmadi, 46, had intended to leave his post after the World Cup in Qatar, but Algeria’s failure to qualify at the last barrier against Cameroon changed his calculations.
Belmadi will have to challenge the African Nations Cup in early 2024 in Ivory Coast, after a disappointing participation in the last edition in Cameroon, in addition to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup that will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
