It’s already been 10 years since the Alfa Romeo 4C made its debut and almost two since it went out of production. A parable that was not among the luckiest but that undoubtedly left its mark for the goodness of a project that was rooted in the tradition of the Biscione. The direction taken by the Arese-based car manufacturer was clear, to give a new point of reference for the brand’s future models, models which however never saw the light of day and which dwindled until the arrival of Giulia and Stelvio.
The shapes of the Alfa Romeo 4C
But let’s rewind the tape, going back to the years of the debut of the 4C. Alfa Romeo unveils its sports car to the world at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, thus presenting a two-seater car with remarkable performance, capable of winking at the world of supercars. Only by looking with eyes that go beyond the shapes of its bodywork, inspired by important sports cars of the past such as the 33 Stradale, can we understand how important the 4C is for the Arese-based car manufacturer. A model that wanted to be the technological banner of the Alfa Romeo, so much so as to justify an investment of 100 million euros at a time when the Fiat group, gripped by the crisis in Europe and in Italy, closed the purse strings and postponed projects (see the unborn heir of the Fiat Bravo) sales volumes decidedly higher than the mere 3,000-3,500 units a year of the 4C that the Maserati factory in Modena will be able to churn out. Just press the brake pedal, turn the key in the block to hear the 1,750 turbo thundering from behind. Especially if the race exhaust was chosen from the list of optionals, capable of making the most of the V8 engine, which is already capable of transmitting a respectable sound in itself. A soundtrack that is always your companion in the passenger compartment and reinforces the driving experience behind the wheel of the 4C. Yes, because even before the performance (258 km/h top speed and just 4.5 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h), what makes this Alfa Romeo unique is that sensation which, like on racing cars, makes feel the driver an integral part of the car.
The feeling of a real sportswoman
Thus, as if it were one’s own car for a lifetime, with the 4C one finds oneself immediately driving with extreme ease. On the road, within the limits, you can rely on the 350 Nm of torque (80% is already available from 1,800 rpm), and travel quickly with a trickle of gas, with the robotised gearbox that shifts rather gently the other. An uncompromising supercar, but a dream come true. This was the objective of the Alfa Romeo top management when they gave the project the green light and this is in fact the 4C. At the time of its launch this car cost 54,300 euros, an amount that not everyone could invest in a car, it is undeniable, but that was not even a stratospheric amount in relation to the performance and technological contents that this Alfa Romeo offered, starting from the carbon monocoque developed together with Dallara. A car that today has also become an object of worship and collection, with some specimens that in specialized auctions can easily exceed the new sales list.
