Alex Pompa, the 34 stab wounds inflicted on his father with six different knives. “No self-defense”
The judges overturn everything, no self-defense For Alex Pompa, who killed his father to protect his mother from her violent husband. The reason for this verdict is written in the reasons for the sentence. On the evening of April 30, 2020, Alex killed his father Giuseppe Pompa in “anger”: he lost his self-control“and he had one”disproportionate reaction“, showing “a persistence unjustified”. These are some of the key passages contained in the document of the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Turin, which sentenced the young man, now 22 years old, to 6 years, 2 months and 20 days in prison For voluntary homicide. The verdict – we read in Il Corriere della Sera – which takes into account the mitigating factors of partial mental defect and that of provocation (legitimised by the Constitutional Court) – he overturned that of the judges Of first degree, who had acquitted Alex on grounds of self-defense. Not only has the sanctioning profile been reformed, but also the narrative of the crime takes on different contours.
In fact, we read – and Il Corriere reports it – that “it is completely clear that the offense caused to Pompa (death, ed.) through the use of six weapons and the infliction of 34 stab wounds cannot be said to be in any way inferior, equal or tolerably superior to the harm suffered or threatened”. In short, the officials go beyond the postulate of Court of Assizes according to which at that moment Alex had in front of him the choice between “live or die”. The audio recordings listened to in the courtroom (which tell moments of daily life) show a “toxic family” situation and “the man's habitual mistreatment towards his wife, experienced as an avoidable routine, only to be curbed in its excesses but ultimately to be endured” and in any case insufficient for self-defense.
