At least 62 people have died due to the heat wave that affects northern India, including dozens of electoral officials, while the country celebrates this Saturday the last phase of a general election marked by temperatures that have surpassed the 50 degrees.

At least 26 people died in suspected cases of heatstroke in the eastern state of Odisha, said special relief commissioner Satyabrata Sahu in statements to the Indian agency PTI.
“Of these, five deaths sunstroke have been confirmed”, he said, while authorities await autopsies on the remaining ones.

Much of northern India continues to be on alert due to high temperatures, exceeding 45 degrees in many cities, according to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Heat wave conditions are expected to begin to dissipate across much of the country in the coming days, coinciding with the arrival of the monsoon in southern and northeastern India.
High temperatures have marked the mammoth Indian general elections, which began on April 19 and whose results are expected next Tuesday.
The Prime Minister, the Hindu Narendra Modi, is seeking a third consecutive term against an alliance of opposition parties led by the historic Congress Party (INC).
