Ford has initiated a market review of almost 43 thousand SUV vehiclesspecifically models Bronco Sport 2022 and 2023 and Escape 2022due to a defect in the fuel injectors that can cause leaks and increase the risk of fires.
According to United States media, the company has recognized that the injectors can crack and allowing gasoline to accumulate near hot engine surfaces, potentially could light up.
Proposed corrective measures:
In response, Ford has proposed a solution that includes installation of a tube to redirect gasoline away from hot surfaces and toward the ground, thereby mitigating the risk of ignition.
Additionally, the software of the engine control to identify and respond to pressure drops in the fuel injection system.
This software will disable the high-pressure fuel pump and limit engine power to reduce the temperature in the engine compartment, according to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Communication and extended warranty:
Owners of affected vehicles will begin receiving notifications by letter starting April 1. Ford has reported that it does not will replace the fuel injectors directlysince it is confident that the planned corrective measures will be sufficient to prevent future incidents.
However, the company has extended the warranty for the cracked fuel injectors and ensures that owners facing this issue will receive replacements as needed. Details on the extended warranty will be provided in June.
Problem history and safety:
This call for review is a continuation of an action similar started in 2022 for the same problem. Ford states that the previously applied repairs have been effective and there are no known new incidents following those fixes.
In addition, the company has stressed that it is not necessary for vehicles to be parked exclusively outdoors, since there is no evidence that fires occur when vehicles are parked and the engines are off.
According to Ford, the problem affects approximately 1% of the SUVs mentioned. To date, there have been five reported underhood fires and 14 under-warranty fuel injector replacements.a, but no accidents or injuries related to this defect have been recorded.
