I’ll step back
The one between Aleix Espargarò el‘Aprilia it was a beautiful story of sport and redemption. The two parties chose each other in 2017, when perhaps no one believed either in the Spanish rider or in the Italian manufacturer and together, one step after another, they went from being the Cinderella of the grid to a duo capable of competing at the top of MotoGP, harvesting in particular from 2021 onwards ten podiums and three victories.
Now this story is destined to reach its epilogue with the announcement of his retirement from racing done by Aleix himself on his home weekend in Barcelona. From 2025 the ‘Captain’ will no longer be a regular rider on the MotoGP grid, but this does not mean that he will stop riding motorbikes or even that he will leave the MotoGP paddock. As had already been revealed by some rumors, the desire of the Spanish centaur is to continue working as a tester.
A new adventure
The real surprise, however, came from his interview with the Spanish woman DAZN: Espargarò’s future as a test driver seems destined to unfold far from the house in Noale. “I’m only 34 years old, I’m fast, I’m physically fit, I like to ride, develop – explained #41 – I would like to be a test rider, there is also a big change in regulations coming, I would really like to continue riding a motorbike. We talked to almost all the brands, but most likely it won’t be Aprilia”he ruled.
The relationship with the Italian manufacturer, however, does not appear to be ruined at all and indeed Espargarò took the decision to retire also taking into consideration the possibility of no longer being able to give his maximum effort to the team which led him to victory in MotoGP: “I said to myself: Aleix, you have to be fair to yourself and to your team, to the bike you have, to Aprilia’s investment. If you are 95% aware and not 101% aware it is because the time has come. After the Jerez Sprint I told Laura (the wife, ed.) that it was over“. Now a new adventure opens.
