According to WHO data, Europe has the highest level of alcohol consumption in the world: seven of the top ten countries with the highest alcohol consumption are in the European Union (EU), where approximately 240,000 people died in 2019 due to alcohol, with three out of every ten deaths resulting from cancer.
Furthermore, a report published in 2023 by the European Region of the WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) showed that in 2020, 4.2% of new cancer cases registered in the EU (about 111,300 people) were caused by alcohol consumption.

The research, as if this were not enough, also highlights that the most common types of cancer related to alcohol were breast cancer in women and colorectal cancer in men. And not only that: the “quite clear risk” of developing cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus and liver was warned.
The consumption of alcohol and tobacco, along the same lines, multiplies the risk of developing certain tumors by up to 30%, such as those of the mouth, throat, esophagus and larynx. Given this panorama, The European Commission presented the European Plan against Cancerin 2021.
