After announcing his withdrawal from the Conde de Godó this Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz traveled to Barcelona and made a statement to the press, without speaking time, to explain the discomfort he suffers in his forearm and that has prevented him from playing in the tournament he has won the last two years.
“As you already know, I will not be able to play in Barcelona,” the world number three and champion of the 2022 and 2023 editions said this Tuesday. “I wanted to come and explain it in my own words. This started in Monte Carlo, in the first training session. After an hour I felt quite significant discomfort in my forearm. At the time I thought it wasn't going to be a big deal. With my team and with the physio we were treating him as best as possible, doing the necessary tests to see what he had there, to see if he could play in Monte Carlo,” said Alcaraz, who had no choice but to withdraw from the Monegasque tournament at 24 hours of his debut.
«I couldn't due to deadlines. I returned home to see if with recovery, with days, with training and with patience I would be able to get to Barcelona as best as possible. I took a test on Saturday which came back with pretty positive images, which gave me hope to be here. Sunday was the litmus test, it was the first day since training in Monte Carlo and it didn't go as I expected. I noticed it again and every time I increased the intensity, I noticed more and more discomfort,” added the Spaniard, who announced this Sunday that he was leaving the Conde de Godó.
«It was a difficult decision, since it is a very important and special tournament for me, and making the decision not to come is very complicated. It is a difficult moment, because the images that come out are positive, but my feelings are not good. Leaving Barcelona behind, where he will give up the 500 points that he defended as current champion, Alcaraz's next objective is the Madrid Masters 1,000, where he also won the title in 2023.
The Madrid tournament begins next Wednesday, April 24, which gives the Murcian a little more room to recover from this ailment in his right forearm. «I have 100% of my concentration on recovering. My goal is to try to go to Madrid, but at the moment I am not at all clear, since they gave me some deadlines, which I have met, and the feelings have not been good, so in Madrid I do not want to rush,” he said.
