Thursday 2 and Saturday 3 February Albania has taken its first steps towards motor sport. Lirim Zendeli, a 23-year-old driver born in Germany but with Albanian roots, was invited by the Italian ambassador in Tirana, Fabrizio Bucci, as part of an initiative aimed at creating a circuit approved for all categories (therefore including F1) in the city of Elbasan, about 45 km from the capital. Zendeli is the latest “acquisition” of Monaco Increase Management, a company founded by the Italian entrepreneur Salvatore Gandolfo who already has under contract, among others, Alex Palou, 2021 Indycar champion and third McLaren driver in F1, David Vidales (who will race in the Super Formula Light in Japan in 2023) and current Formula E leader Pascal Wehrlein (former DTM champion and Grand Prix driver, including experience in the Ferrari simulator). During the meeting, the friendship ties that Italy, home of motor racing, has with the Balkan country were reaffirmed. On Friday at the Hotel Maritim Plaza, in the presence of the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, the competition for the projects of the racetrack was held, with four proposals coming from Italy, Great Britain and Austria. In the end, the former F1 driver’s project proved successful Alex Wurz which presented a multifunctional plant whose construction could take place within four years.
