The death of Akira Toriyama on March 1, and the revelation of this sad event on March 7, was something completely unexpected for everyone. However, it was not an unprecedented event, since it has been revealed that the mangaka's health was already in decline since last year.
In a recent interview, Takashi Matsuyama, Akira Toriyama's assistant, revealed that the mangaka was diagnosed with brain cancer in the fall of last year, and underwent surgery to remove this tumor in early 2024. Even after the operation, the author had trouble quitting smoking. This is what Matsuyama commented on the matter:
“At that time, Toriyama told him that he would undergo surgery for a brain tumor in the new year.
The experience of working with Toriyama-san was like a dream come true. I am amazed again by the fact that I had the privilege of doing something incredible. Everything I know, I learned from him.”
Unfortunately, there is no more information about Akira Toriyama's suffering before his death. However, These new comments make it clear that the health of the Dragon Ball creator was already in decline and, despite all attempts to avoid a fateful event, on March 1, the mangaka died from an acute subdural hematoma.
Just like what happened with Kentao Miura a couple of years ago, Let's hope that Toriyama's case is a warning for the rest of the mangakas who need to take care of their health.. On related topics you can learn more about the illness that affected the author here. Likewise, this is what will happen to Dragon Ball without Akira Toriyama.
Editor's Note:
It's a real shame what happened to Akira Toriyama. Even when the mangaka avoided a tragedy by undergoing cancer surgery, another illness took the creator of Dragon Ball from us, and took many by surprise, even those who knew that the author's health was not entirely well.
