The eyewitness noticed the fire while the window was already in flames.

Silver fox hostel the fire progressed very quickly, says an eyewitness contacted by Helsingin Sanomat.

The eyewitness says that he was staying on the first floor of the hostel and was aware of the fire due to the screams of another person sleeping in the same room around half past one on Tuesday morning.

He got out through the main door. At this stage, according to him, the fire had not yet spread downstairs, but the downstairs smelled of smoke and the staircase leading to the upper floor was covered in smoke.

According to the witness, he did not hear the fire alarms go off, but he cannot say whether the fire alarms had sounded at some point. When he got out, the upper floor of the hostel and the bicycle storage room downstairs were already in flames.

Belgian magazine the story told by another eyewitness interviewed is similar. The woman interviewed by the magazine said that she woke up at midnight to a bright orange light, which she thought was the northern lights at first glance. According to an eyewitness interviewed by HS, some of those who escaped from the second floor had to jump into the snow to save themselves. An eyewitness interviewed by a Belgian newspaper also reported that people jumped from the balcony to escape the flames.

Both eyewitnesses reported that many escaped from the hostel in only their underwear.

An eyewitness interviewed by a Belgian newspaper recalls that it took a long time for the rescue service to arrive. The eyewitness interviewed by HS does not remember how long it took for help to arrive, but according to him, the ambulance arrived quite quickly.

The researchers are therefore looking at all the possible causes of the fire side by side, and as the investigation progresses, they rule out different scenarios. Yle told earlier on Thursday that the hostel fire investigators have investigated the electric bikes on the hostel's porch as one of the possible causes of the fire.

“Maybe it was an option at some point, but at least it's not the main trend at the moment,” says Bieber.

According to Bieber, the hostel has burned so badly to the ground that it will take some time to find the exact cause of the fire.

The Lapland police are still investigating and will not comment on the details of the case.

Hostel fire happened in Äkäslompolo in Kolar the night before Tuesday, February 13. The hostel's main building burned to the ground.

The fire has claimed two lives so far, and one of the people staying at the hostel is still missing. According to the police, it is very likely that the missing person is dead.
