A new study shows: Education and professional success are a question of origin. However, Hubert Aiwanger is annoyed by these results.
Munich/Berlin – The topic of unequal educational opportunities has been a topic of social and educational policy discussion for several years. A new Study by the ifo Institute has now examined the situation in the individual federal states again in more detail. The Bavarian Deputy Prime Minister Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters) noted the results with indignation.

ifo study: Education slap for Bavaria
According to the ifo study, educational opportunities vary greatly depending on the federal state. Children from unfavorable family backgrounds therefore have the highest opportunity to attend a grammar school in Berlin and Brandenburg. The probability here is half as great (Berlin: 53.8 percent; Brandenburg: 52.8 percent) as children from favorable backgrounds. Nationwide the value is 44.6 percent. Saxony and Bavaria are at the lower end of this spectrum with the lowest percentage points.
Ludger Wößmann, head of the ifo Center for the Economics of Education, emphasizes in a press release the crucial role of parents’ education and income in educational opportunities, which vary in the individual federal states.
Bayern dropped in the ifo ranking – Aiwanger upset
The publication of the study was not well received at all by Bavaria’s Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger. Reason for this: Bavaria is in last place in the ifo ranking. The probability that children with parents without a high school diploma and a higher income will attend a Bavarian high school is estimated at just 20.1 percent. The probability of these children attending high school in Bavaria is also only 38.1 percent – i.e. noticeably below the national average mentioned above.
Aiwanger comments on his Xchannel indignant and writes: “Finally fodder for left-wing egalitarians again. Berlin is supposedly the best when it comes to equal opportunities for students to go to high school regardless of their background, Bavaria is the worst. SCANDALLL!”
Aiwanger highlights special features of the Bavarian school system
The state chairman of the Free Voters, himself a trained agricultural engineer, justifies his anger with the circumstances in the Free State, which would not be reflected in the study: “The fact that in Bavaria there are many good students at secondary school and other countries no longer have this type of school , hardly anyone is interested. And you should also keep in mind that failed high school students are often worse off than solid secondary school graduates who then go on to do an apprenticeship.”
The politician concludes his post with the words: “Educational equity is not best where most people are equally badly off.” Meanwhile, the Federal Statistical Office only pointed out in 2023 that in Germany higher educational qualifications still lead to higher salaries. (chnnn)
