Aifa, free pill but only for women under 26
Free birth control pill for all women up to 26 years old. This was decided by the board of directors of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), establishing that the pill can be obtained free of charge only in clinics or in public structures such as hospitals. In May the same board of directors had rejected the proposal to make the pill free for all women.
The latest decision, reported by La Repubblica, follows the positive opinion of the conference of the Regions, some of which have already independently started the free delivery of pills to those under 26.
Last May 24, the board of directors rejected the proposal of the technical-scientific commission (cts) to make the pill free for all women. A rejection motivated by the cost, estimated at 140 million euros. On 31 October, the board of directors gave a mandate to the AIFA management to complete the new procedure. We await the new response from the CTS, whose opinion is binding by law when it concerns the reimbursement, even partial, of medicines.
The decision to limit distribution to clinics and hospitals will affect the possibility of reaching a large number of women, especially in the south. In fact, the capillarity is not comparable with that of the pharmacies, where the drug was originally intended to be distributed.
