Numbers don’t lie, they say. But let that be exactly what a liar would say. According to the sales figures, the crossover and the SUV are the perfect body shape – but that’s complete bullshit. If you want a car with a lot of space and a high seat, then you should go for a van or an MPV. There was a time when car buyers understood that, in the heyday of the Renault Espace or the Seat Alhambra.
Although Volkswagen neatly meets the crossover trend with the ID.4, fortunately they now also come with a worthy MPV offensive. In addition to the Multivan T7, which became almost 40,000 euros cheaper, here is now the electric ID after a long wait. buzz. And that’s not too early, because if you include the Microbus concept, the retrobus has been in the making for more than twenty years.
Volkswagen’s largest electric car in Europe
ID. Buzz is the final name of the MPV. It is on the same platform as the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5. VW stretched this so-called MEB platform to 4.7 meters long and just under 2 meters wide. Incidentally, it is not even the longest iteration of the MEB platform, because with a few centimeters more that is the ID.6 that is only for China. It is, however, the coolest ID at the moment. The wheelbase is almost 3 meters long.
We get into the ID. Buzz Cargo, so the version with a large loading space (with space for two Euro pallets) and without seats in the back. Volkswagen promises us that the Cargo will drive exactly the same as the passenger version, partly because it also has multi-link suspension on the rear axle, which is quite unique for a commercial vehicle.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is unfortunately not a Multipla
The doubter for the third passenger in the front is unfortunately not available for the passenger version – a shame for the handful of Multipla enthusiasts. The people version of the ID. Buzz is therefore a five-seater for the time being, but a seven-seater is on the way. Strangely enough, no roof racks can be mounted on the ID. Buzz, probably to protect the range. There will be an option for a skylight later on.
The interior of our test car was expertly hidden under pieces of cloth, but keep in mind a variation on the interior of the existing ID models. A small screen behind the wheel, a slightly larger screen in the middle and very few buttons are in any case a certainty.
A deep dashboard in the Volkswagen ID. buzz
The first thing you notice from the driver’s seat is how deep the dashboard is and how far you sit from the windshield. This feels like wasted space, because there is no engine in the front, but that undoubtedly has to do with the short overhangs and that your legs of the Euro NCAP can no longer serve as a crumple zone.
Furthermore, the ID. Buzz to drive like a beefy SUV. The seating position is excellent and the steering wheel comes straight from the passenger car line. The suspension comfort is in order and only over thresholds do you feel that you are on the road with an empty bus – the rear bounces a bit more. Torque comes in linearly, providing smooth acceleration.
The price and the range are not yet known, but take into account respectively slightly more and slightly less than the ID.4. With a price of about 60,000 euros, it would be almost as expensive as the Multivan T7 with plug-in hybrid powertrain. A dilemma for large families.
