China’s ambassador to Brazil, Yang Wanming, is stepping down after three years. In tweets, he gave a brief overview of his performance: “thanks to the joint effort of all sectors of society, China-Brazil relations have been maturing and consolidating. We have fruitful cooperation in various fields, more intense social exchange and closer consultation on multilateral issues.”
He cites that the cooperation between the two countries provides solid support to national development and assumes an increasing global relevance.
Before working in Brazil, Wanming was ambassador to Chile and Argentina. One of the closest figures to him in Brazilian politics is the governor of São Paulo, João Doria. The approach was more intense from 2020, when the Butantan Institute started to manufacture the Coronavac vaccine in partnership with the Chinese company Sinovac. Another close figure is the minister of agriculture, Teresa Cristina. China is the main buyer of Brazilian soy.
In his trajectory as ambassador, the diplomat was involved in controversies with deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the president of the Republic and classified the then American president Donald Trump as the “great shameless comedian in the world in this century.” At least once, he backed off, ending up undoing a retweet in which he defined the Bolsonaro family as “the great poison of this country”.
