After the derby between Sevilla and Betis, the world of football must reflect

Yesterday the postponed derby between Betis and Sevilla was played, but unfortunately football is no longer news. The Cup tie was marked by a contemptible attack by a Betis fan on Joan Jordan, a Sevilla footballer, which caused the match to be suspended. But it has also left an important debate about sportsmanship and ethics ajar, above all, after seeing the images in which Joan Jordan exaggerates the aggression and Lopetegui encourages him to fake dizziness.

In football we are increasingly used to experiencing Dantesque scenes, in which footballers feign much more pain to force cards or fouls, even penalties in their favor. Other times we also see this situation to lose time and the game is extended. The last scene in Seville with the Sevilla squad trying to force the match to be suspended is just one more fact that shows that football needs to recover its values.

Let us remember that football is a sport, and although there is more and more at stake, especially in economic terms, what it is about is that some athletes win if they are better on the pitch. Having to resort to tricks only tarnish the spirit of the game that should be above all else. In addition, football is designed for the enjoyment of the fans, who are going to cheer on their team. The fact that the Sevilla squad preferred to play behind closed doors on another day says a lot about the loss of the values of this sport.

The bodies that control football have been trying to punish these practices for some time, but it is still insufficient. The other day we saw how Valencia CF denounced in its official account that the VAR had not entered to review a very questionable penalty, in which it was evident that Casemiro was dropped.

The match between Betis and Sevilla should never have been suspended, because if there was no danger for either the fans or the players, the competition should always prevail.
