Ron Gilbert is back in full force: after several years away from the scenes of active video game development, recently the creator of Monkey Island he is back in a notable creative phase and, for his next project, he is working on a 2D pixel art game described as one “Zelda meets Diablo meets Thimbleweed Park“, and the definition is definitely interesting.
Apparently, development has already started for several months and there are the first images that give an idea of what it is about. Indeed, the reference to Zelda is quite evident in the general setting, as well as in the pixel art style applied to this type of shot also made famous by Stardew Valley.
The fact that Diablo is cited among the inspirations indicates that it is a sort of action role-playing game, but there seems to also be room for puzzles, given that there is also talk of references to Thimbleweed Park, which was a graphic adventure pure.
A really interesting mix
In fact, Ron Gilbert’s CV leads us to think that this game also brings with it a good dose of puzzle to solve, and combined with the mechanics that seem to be present they can create a truly very interesting mix.
The images also show stages within dungeonas well as energy bars, levels and weapons, so it seems to be a mixed game between action and adventure, with probable RPG-style elements, but let’s wait to be able to see it in more detail to get to know it better.
There isn’t one yet exit date specifies but the game, which does not yet even have a precise name, should arrive towards the end of 2024, or perhaps at the beginning of 2025, again from the Terrible Toybox label with which Gilbert also launched the recent Return to Monkey Island.
