Owner of the largest hotel infrastructure in the state, Gramado saw its main source of income come to a standstill. “We have 300 hotels closed, 250 restaurants closed, the entire economy closed,” highlighted the mayor.
Famous for its “European” climate, typical German architecture and nationally recognized for its chocolate production, Gramado is now dealing with humanitarian problems. According to Nestor Tissot, there are over 1,000 homeless people, with no hope or expectation of a quick return home.
“The vast majority will not be able to return, there are several neighborhoods destroyed, streets destroyed. Many houses will no longer be able to be rebuilt in these locations. We need expropriated areas to rebuild, we have all the reconstruction”, added the mayor.
Despite this, education and health services operate normally in the city, assured Tissot, who was part of the group of mayors who met with governor Eduardo Leite this Wednesday (22).
Airport closed
