The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, told Israel that the orders of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) are binding, after that court ordered this Friday (24) that the country “immediately halt ” its ongoing offensive on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
“The Secretary-General recalls that, in accordance with the Charter and Statute of the (International Court of Justice), its decisions are binding, and expects the parties to duly comply with the order,” says a statement released by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson. Guterres.
In addition to emphasizing the “mandatory nature” of compliance with the ICJ order, the UN Secretary-General stated that he “will transmit notification of the precautionary measures to the Security Council without delay”.
The UN’s highest judicial body also called on Israel on Friday to cease “any further action in Rafah province that could result in living conditions for Palestinians that lead to their total or partial physical destruction.”
The ICJ also demanded that the Israeli government guarantee free access to the Gaza Strip for any mission seeking to investigate allegations of “genocide” weighing on its authorities and ordered the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to keep the Rafah crossing open. for the “unimpeded and large-scale” provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
All of these precautionary measures, which Guterres said “seek to protect the Palestinians as a group that falls within what is established in the Genocide Convention,” were voted on by a panel of 15 judges and approved with 13 votes in favor and two against.
Israel will have to present a report within a month with all the measures adopted to comply with the orders announced this Friday by the court.
The ICJ also warned Israel that it must “respect the precautionary measures announced in January and March”, which include preventing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from committing “acts of genocide” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and, once again , stop “preventing” humanitarian aid from accessing the territory.
